Best Time to Move in Puget Sound

When to move in Seattle, Tacoma, and Bellevue — and what dates to avoid at all costs.

Timing your move well can mean the difference between a smooth, affordable experience and a stressful, overbooked one. In the Puget Sound area, when you move matters. Here is what 15,000+ moves have taught us.

Peak Moving Season in Puget Sound

The greater Seattle area sees its highest moving demand from late May through mid-September. Summer moves are popular because of school year transitions, end-of-lease cycles, and better weather. During peak season, moving companies book up weeks in advance. If you must move in summer, book at least 4–6 weeks ahead.

Best Months to Move

October – November: Our Top Pick

Fall is the sweet spot. The summer rush is over, availability is wide open, and October weather in the Pacific Northwest is still often mild and dry. You will have more flexibility on dates and some companies offer better pricing during slower periods.

January – March: Best Value of the Year

Winter moves in Washington get a bad reputation because of rain — but it rains year-round here. January through March offers the absolute best availability and often the best pricing. If your timeline is flexible, this window is excellent.

April – May: Great Balance

Spring offers good weather, reasonable availability, and rates that have not spiked yet. A smart choice if summer is not required.

Puget Sound weather reality check:

Seattle averages about 38 inches of rain per year — less than New York or Miami. Professional moving crews work in the rain year-round and know how to protect your belongings.

Best Day of the Week to Move

Monday through Thursday are consistently the best days. Friday and Saturday account for the majority of all move bookings. Traffic on I-5 and I-405 is significantly worse on Fridays, adding time to your move.

Best Time of Day to Start

8:00 AM start times are ideal. Starting early means beating afternoon traffic, a fresh crew at full energy, buffer time if the move runs long, and less elevator contention in apartment buildings.
